61,510 teachers hired by DepEd, still not enough to fill 70,000 vacancies for school year 2013-2014

ABS-CBN correspondent Jing Castañeda reports that "the Department of Education (DepEd) is hiring 61,510 teachers for schoolyear 2013-2014 to finally solve the shortage of teachers in public schools."

ABS-CBN correspondent Jing Castañeda reports that "the Department of Education (DepEd) is hiring 61,510 teachers for schoolyear 2013-2014 to finally solve the shortage of teachers in public schools."

The report quoted DepEd Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro and Asssistant Secretary Tonisito Umali as saying that "the increase in hiring is historic, given that merely an average of 10,000 new teachers is hired annually by the agency." The DepEd officials noted, however, that the number of new hires still is insufficient to fill the 70,000 vacancies for teachers for the new school year.

According to the report, the new teachers will receive an entry-level salary of P18,000 per month.
