Euan Paulo Añonuevo of InterAksyon.com reports that Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) is set to launch a prepaid electricity service for its consumers in the first quarter of 2014.

The report quoted Meralco senior vice president and head for customer retail services and corporate communications Alfredo S. Panlilio as saying in a press conference on Tuesday that the company "is already 'deep' into the initial testing and development stages of prepaid electricity." The article explained that prepaid electricity "allows consumers to control their use and expenses in the same way prepaid load for mobile phones enable subscribers to budget according to their requirements."

Panlilio announced that Meralco "is set to receive from a contracted third party the prepaid system the utility will employ for commercial pilot tests" during the third quarter of 2013. It will seek the Energy Regulatory Commission's approval for the system after holding the commercial tests before rolling out the service.
