Dexter San Pedro of InterAksyon.com reports that President Benigno Aquino III has signed a new law "criminalizing driving under the influence of alcohol or dangerous drugs."

The report explained that under Republic Act No. 10586 or the Anti-drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013, "a law enforcement officer who has probable cause to believe a person is driving under the influence of alcohol or dangerous drugs shall conduct field sobriety tests." Among the signs of drunk or drugged driving enumerated in the law are "overspeeding, weaving, lane straddling, sudden stops, swerving, poor coordination or the evident smell of alcohol on a person’s breath." The article further noted that the driver's license of a driver who refuses to undergo the mandatory field sobriety and drug tests will be confiscated and automatically revoked.

The penalties for the driver discovered to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs "who is involved in an accident that does not result in physical injuries or homicide" include three months' imprisonment and a fine ranging from P20,000 to P80,000. The fine can go up to P200,000 if the violation results in physical injuries and up to P500,000 if it led to homicide. The license of a non-professional driver will also be suspended or perpetually revoked following a conviction for drunk or drugged driving.
