German scientists discover new "pirate" ant in PH

Tricia Aquino of InterAksyon.com reports that German scientists recently discovered a new ant species in the Philippines. The insect has been dubbed as the "pirate ant" because the dark stripes it has over its eyes make it look like it is wearing blindfolds.

The report explained that scientists Bernhard Seifert of the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History Görlitz and Sabine Frohschammer of the University of Regensburg "discovered the insect in a rainforest in Los Baños, Laguna through a field study, according to the scientific journal ZooKeys." The pirate ant's scientific name is Cardiocondyla pirata.

The report added that when the scientists discovered the ant species between "big stones in a shady streambed," one of the first things they noticed was that the pirate ant has "a pigmentation pattern unknown in any ant worldwide."
