1 woman out of 3 is domestic violence victim, says World Health Organization

The Agence France-Presse reports via InterAksyon.com that new research from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals the "shocking" statistic that one in every three women in the world is a victim of domestic violence.

According to the report, WHO based its findings on data gathered from 81 countries. "The scale of abuse was highest in Asia, where data from Bangladesh, East Timor, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand showed that 37.7 percent of women were affected," the United Nations-based organization said.

WHO disclosed in its first comprehensive study on domestic violence that "women with a violent partner were twice as likely to suffer from depression and develop an alcohol problem, compared to women who did not experience abuse." Abused women are also "far more likely" to contract sexually-transmitted diseases and have an unwanted pregnancy.
