18,000 elected officials assume office despite COMELEC’s unfinished campaign expense audit

Jet Villa of InterAksyon.com reports that over 18,000 elected officials will begin their term at noon today even if the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has not yet finished auditing the Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCEs) to see if any of them overspent during their campaign.

The report explained that "under an agreement signed between the poll body and the late Secretary Jesse Robredo of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), local elected officials will not be allowed to assume office unless they have filed a complete SOCE." Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. however said that Comelec is not yet done evaluating the SOCEs of the local executives and thus has no list of compliant officials to submit to DILG.

Brillantes added that he "could not immediately ascertain how the agreement could be implemented once the officials are sworn into office."
