More than 500,000 Pinoy kids severely malnourished
Senator Grace Poe wants to give free meals to school kids so they wouldn’t grow malnourished.
Ernie Reyes of InterAksyon.com reports that Senator Grace Poe has filed a bill to combat hunger in primary schools after learning from the Department of Education (DepEd) that more than 500,000 kids in the Philippines are "severely wasted" due to malnutrition.
According to the report, Poe said she was prompted to file a bill instituting a free Nutri-Meal Program for school children in all public elementary and high schools because data from DepEd and the United Nations (UN) show that hunger and malnutrition are prevalent among Filipino children. DepEd puts the number of "severely wasted" malnourished children at 562,262 as of 2012 while the UN estimates that six million Filipino children lack nutrition.
Under Poe's bill mandating the creation of the "Sustansiya sa Batang Pilipino" program, nutritious meals would be made available for free to students in all elementary and high school levels in the K-12 public education sector.
