Chilean embassy announces new winner in tilt involving "photo thief" Mark Joseph Solis
The real winner is a 55-year-old photographer named Medardo Marquez.
Tarra Quismundo of the Philippine Daily Inquirer reports that 55-year-old photographer Medardo Marquez has been named the new winner of the "Smiles for the World" photo contest sponsored by the Chilean Embassy in Manila.
The report explained that Marquez has been chosen by the board of judges to take the place of photo plagiarist Mark Joseph Solis. The 55-year-old photographer originally placed second to Solis, a graduate student at the University of the Philippines. But Solis was stripped off his title and prizes a few weeks ago when it was discovered that he lifted the photograph of a Brazil-based social worker and submitted it as his own entry to the competition.
Marquez, who took the photo with an old film camera, won a $1,000 cash prize, a new mobile phone and a free trip to Chile and Brazil.
