ABS-CBNNews.com reports that suspected members of the Martilyo Gang caused panic inside the crowded SM City North EDSA on Sunday evening (December 15) after they smashed a jewelry display inside the department store and took away expensive pieces of jewelry.
According to the report, commotion ensued inside the mall after alleged gunshots were heard by shoppers at around 7 p.m., with some witnesses claiming they saw people carrying a bomb and a gun. The Quezon City Police District said "two to three persons were involved in the incident, and a hammer was recovered in the crime scene."
SM Malls confirmed the incident in a statement but assured the public that the police are already investigating the crime. "There is a ’Martilyo Gang’ robbery in a store in North EDSA. The police are on top of the situation and handling the matter. No one was hurt. The only weapon used was a martilyo. The mall remains open," it said.
President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and Department of Local and Interior Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas were later seen at the scene of the crime.
In January this year, the Martilyoo gang also struck at SM Megamall.
