Armin Adina of the Philippine Daily Inquirer reports that Miss Philippines Bea Rose Santiago bested 66 other candidates to win this year's Miss International beauty pageant in Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday night (December 17). Miss Netherlands Nathalie den Dekker placed second in the competition, while Miss Friendship Casey Radley of New Zealand finished third.
The report pointed out that the 23-year-old ramp model's victory marks the third time the Philippines took home a major beauty title in 2013. "Just in September, two Filipino women became the country's first winner in two competitions: Mutya Datul in the Miss Supranational contest in Belarus, and Megan Young in the Miss World pageant in Indonesia," the article said.
Santiago is the fifth Filipina to be crowned as Miss International-after Gemma Cruz (1964), Aurora Pijuan (1970) Melanie Marquez (1979), and Precious Lara Quigaman (2005).
