Congressman proposes changing name of Commonwealth Avenue to Eraño Manalo Avenue in time for Iglesia ni Cristo centennial

Will this proposal gain ground in Congress?

Lira Dalangin-Fernandez of InterAksyon.com reports that Marikina Rep. Romero Federico "Miro" Quimbo has proposed changing the name of Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City to Eraño Manalo Avenue as a way of commemorating the centennial year of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC).

The report quoted Quimbo as saying in the explanatory note of House Bill 3673 that it is only fitting for the 12.4-kilometer road to be renamed after the religious sect's late leader since "Commonwealth Avenue is interwoven with the Iglesia ni Cristo."The lawmaker cited the presence of INC's headquarters, its school and hospital-- the New Era College and New Era General Hospital, respectively-- as proof that the road has become "an important institutional core of the INC."

Quimbo said he hopes the measure will be passed in time for the INC's centennial celebration on July 27. The influential religious sect, which claims to have millions of followers, was founded in 1914 by Eraño's father, Felix Manalo.
