Manila police chief sacks 21 cops after catching them sleeping on the job in a surprise visit to the police station

They weren’t given time to prepare for his unannounced inspection.

ABS-CBNNews.com reports that 21 police officers assigned to the Barbosa Police Community Precinct (PCP) in Quiapo, Manila were immediately relieved from their posts after the newly-appointed Manila Police District (MPD) Director, posing as a civilian, caught them sleeping on the job.

The report explained that MPD Chief Superintendent Rolando Asuncion decided to visit the Barbosa police station by chance on Wednesday (March 5) as he was on his way to work. "He pretended to be a civilian who will file a police blotter but the 'sarhento de mesa' did not recognize him." Aside from seeing several policemen sleeping, the local police chief also saw ash trays and empty bottles scattered on the police station's floor.

Asuncion had to reveal who he was on the spot after a policeman told him off for taking a video of the messy police station with his cellphone. The errant policemen have been reassigned to the Public Safety Battalion and a new PCP commander has been named for the Barbosa precinct.
