Swiss firm ranks Metro Manila No. 2 in "World’s Riskiest Cities" list
But didn’t we all know this already?
Cheryl M. Arcibal of Philstar.com reports: "According to Switzerland-based reinsurance company Swiss Re’s Mind the Risk survey (which results in the global ranking of cities under threat from natural disasters), the residents of Metro Manila would be potentially affected by the aggregated perils of storms, earthquakes, and other natural disasters."
The report noted: "To come up with the ranking, Swiss Re considered two indicators: the size of the urban population that could be hit by one or more natural perils (index of people potentially affected) and the possible impact on the local and national economy (index of the value of working days lost)."
Out of the 616 largest urban areas that were assessed by Swiss Re, the following were tagged as the Top 10 riskiest:
1. Tokyo-Yokohama area, Japan
2. Metro Manila, Philippines
3. Pearl River Delta, China
4. Osaka-Kobe area, Japan
5. Jakarta, Indonesia
6. Nagoya, Japan
7. Kolkata, India
8. Shanghai, China
9. Los Angeles, USA
10. Tehran, Iran
