Pia Cayetano files a petition to probe condo construction behind Rizal Monument

Manila Skyline’s newest friend

The chair of the committee on education, arts and culture, Senator Pia Cayetano, filed a resolution seeking to probe the construction of the Torre de Manila. According to a report published by InterAksyon on Thursday (August 7), Cayetano’s petition claims that the condominium tower "would not only spoil the view of the monument but also disrespect the memory of national hero Jose Rizal."

Cayetano’s petition also sites the review of several laws and policies that protect national and historical sites, including Republic Act No. 10066 or the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009, which lays down the guidelines for the maintenance of a heritage zone. RA 10066 states that "the appearance of streets, parks, monuments...as close to their appearance at the time the area was of most importance to Philippine history as determined by the National Historical Institute."
