Iloilo City was placed under modified enhanced community quarantine or MECQ beginning Sunday until May 31 to curb the rising number of COVID-19 cases, authorities said.
The Inter-Agency Task Force on the pandemic placed the city under the second highest restrictions dated upon the request of the city government.
What is MECQ or Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine?
Mayor Jerry Treñas earlier issued Executive Order 41 placing Iloilo City under MECQ following the rise of COVID-19 cases in the metro, but its implementation was put on hold pending the approval of IATF.
On Sunday alone, the city recorded 44 new cases of COVID-19.
The IATF also extended the MECQ in the provinces of Apayao, Benguet and Cagayan until the end of May. The provinces were initially placed under MECQ only until May 23.
Metro Manila and its surrounding provinces of Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, and Cavite have earlier been placed under general community quarantine "with heightened restrictions" until May 31.
