Classes in all levels in Manila City schools are suspended from Jan. 14 to 21, Mayor Isko Moreno said Thursday due to the rising number of COVID-19 infections.
All face-to-face and online learning are suspended in both public and private schools in the capital city to allow students and teachers to rest.
"The city of Manila is now declaring a health break starting tomorrow, Jan. 14 to Jan. 21. Wala pong pasok whether online or physical classes, all levels," Moreno told reporters.
Earlier, the Department of Education said its regional and school division offices can suspend classes within their jurisdiction depending on the health situation of teachers and students as COVID-19 cases soar driven by the hyper-contagious Omicron variant.
Private schools are also allowed to suspend classes and other learning activities depending on the COVID-19 situation in their area.

The Philippines is fighting a renewed surge of COVID-19 cases that has paralyzed the operations of several businesses. On Wednesday, the country reported its second-highest daily COVID-19 case tally of 32,246 cases since the pandemic started in 2020. Active COVID-19 infections are 208,164.
