(SPOT.ph) Ah yes, Easter Sunday. A certain level of peacefulness is typically expected in the Philippines during this religious celebration, as we are after all a predominantly Catholic country—yet it seems a few old men in the country decided they would wake up on this day and choose otherwise. For some reason.

Three presidential candidates—Isko Moreno, Panfilo Lacson, and Norberto Gonzales—held a press conference at the Manila Peninsula Hotel on Sunday, April 17. Moreno called on fellow presidential candidate and incumbent Vice President Leni Robredo to withdraw from the elections. His exact words? "Now we are calling: Be a hero. Withdraw, Leni."

The reasoning—if it can be called that—behind the plea, according to Moreno: "I'm calling for Leni to withdraw kasi whatever you are doing is not effective against the Marcos. Withdraw, come and join us. Pwede pa-sub? Pa-sub naman. Baka kami maka-three points, isa sa amin." The supposed logic being that there are higher chances of presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos Jr losing the race if she were to withdraw. How, exactly, Moreno didn't clarify.

In a joint statement (that could have been an e-mail or a tweet) the three presidentiables merely reiterated that they weren't backing out of the race. How it veered from that to that (cue vague gestures) we can't say for sure.

Vice President Robredo took to her personal Facebook page on the eve of Sunday with a reminder. "Mula bukas,  20 campaign days [na lang] natitira. Kailangan wag tayong magpatalo sa emosyon," she wrote. Robredo noted that a lot had been said on that day but what remains important is "Focus lang muna tayo sa kampanya—tao sa tao, puso sa puso. May bayan tayong kailangan ipaglaban."

The press conference of Moreno, Lacson, and Gonzales—who, BTW, came in at the third, fifth, and last place in the March 2022 Pulse Asia survey—unsurprisingly had social media erm, not-at-peace on Easter Sunday. From folks just plain confused as to what the goals of the old men were and why (in general) to people angry and, of course, in true Pinoy-humor fashion, all the snark.
