Davao City Mayor Duterte shows support for LGBT rights and same-sex marriage
He still doesn't want to run for president, though.
(SPOT.ph) Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte took a brief break from hunting down importers of fake rice and noodles to appear on Gandang Gabi Vice on July 12. Host Vice Ganda brought out the fun side of the usually stern mayor, and the episode revealed that Mayor Duterte can dance (he twerked like Miley), he's got a good sense of humor (he can joke about himself), and that he believes that #walangforever. He also waved a small rainbow flag for the LGBT community.
Congress has yet to pass the Anti-Discrimination Bill, but in 2012, Mayor Duterte went ahead and carried out a policy that penalizes discrimination against LGBT individuals, minority groups, and differently-abled persons. When asked how he would feel if his son turned out to be gay, the mayor answered, "It’s more of the human dignity than anything else. All human beings are created by God. So reresputuhun mo yung totoong babae o toong lalaki. At kung ito namang isa ay medyo alanganin, then he is also a creation of God."
Mayor Duterte was also asked about his stance on same-sex marriage and though he did not give a direct, straightforward affirmative, his answer was at least meaningful: "Everyone deserves to be happy."
