Binay's visit to UPLB was a disaster
Our Vice President sure knows how to be funny.
(SPOT.ph) Vice President Jejomar Binay went to the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) on Tuesday to discuss governance, transparency, and social transformation.
Binay talked about his accomplishments as Vice President and Makati City Mayor in his speech, emphasizing how he was able to make the lives of Makati citizens better through quality education and health care services. However, he had biting words for the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee and the current administration.
The exciting part came after the Vice President’s talk: the Q&A with the students.
“Hanapin niyo na lang po sir. ‘Di nyo po siguro nakita.”
When asked about the informal settlers in Makati, the Vice President said there was none. The student, however, insisted that he saw these people himself, saying “Hanapin niyo lang po sir. ‘Di nyo po siguro nakita.” Binay backpedaled and said there were still around 3% to 5% informal settlers in the city. “Eh di meron pa rin po…” answered the student.
“Hindi ko talaga alam iyan…”
A young human rights lawyer asked the Vice President on the feasibility of agrarian reform. “Pag ako naging pangulo, aalisin ko ang irrigation fees,” answered Binay. “'Yong CARP [Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program] when it started, was okay. Pero hindi na-sustain ng gobyerno.”
Yet Binay seemed lost when asked about House Bill 252 (Genuine Agrarian Reform bill) filed by Anakpawis Party-List Rep. Fernando Hicap. “Akala ko yung House Bill 252 ay tungkol sa CARP. Ano ba ‘yun?” Binay asked and the audience jeered in response. “Hindi ko talaga alam iyang house bill na ‘yan. Pero okay ‘yan,” Binay added.
“Bakit umaangal kayo?”
The crowd did not bypass the Vice President’s criticism of the current administration. “I am disappointed sa sagot n’yo sir dahil you keep on blaming the government, whereas part kayo nu’n,” another student said. Binay brushed this statement aside and said, “Kanya-kanyang trabaho sa administrasyon.” This resulted in another round of jeers from the audience. The Vice President was quick to ask, “Bakit umaangal kayo? Ano ba’ng function [ng VP]? Ang trabaho ko sa administrasyon ay tungkol sa pabahay eh ‘di yun ang trinabaho ko.”
