Heneral Luna misses cut for Golden Globe nomination + more things you might have missed today

A Second Chance breaks new record, COMELEC cancels Poe's COC, and more.

(SPOT.ph) Busy day, Spotters? We quickly recap 10 things you might have missed while you were off the radar.

1. Heneral Luna misses cut for Golden Globe best foreign film nomination

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Heneral Luna isn’t included in the shortlist for the Best Foreign Language Film award at the Golden Globe Awards next year. The film is the Philippines’ entry at both the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards for the same category. The films that made the cut are The Brand New Testament (Belgium), The Club (Chile), The Fencer (Finland), Mustang (France), and Son of Saul (Hungary).

2. A Second Chance breaks new box-office record

Star Cinema's latest offering continues to break box-office records. As of Wednesday, the film is officially the top-grossing, non-MMFF movie of all time with a total of P442 million in domestic sales. The cast, crew, and top ABS-CBN executives recently held a victory party to celebrate. Both John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo thanked fans for their support, with the latter adding, "Nakakatuwa na nagbunga ng ganito ‘yong paghihirap ng mga tao behind this movie kasi naging challenging ito para sa aming lahat so it’s a nice feeling."

3. The Golden Globe nominees are finally in

The 73rd Annual Golden Globe nominations are in, and they might shock you. Carol, a film about a lesbian romance in 1950s New York, leads the pack with five nods, including Best Drama, Best Director (Todd Haynes), and Best Actress (Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara). Three other films received four nominations apiece, including Leonardo DiCaprio's The Revenant and Ryan Gosling's The Big Short. A controversial nomination is Ridley Scott's sci-fi The Martian, which was included in the Comedy/Musical category, joining actual comedy films like Spy, Joy, and Trainwreck.

4. Harrison Ford urges people to take selfies vs climate change

Harrision Ford is urging the public to take a stand against climate change through selfies in a 15-second call-to-action Facebook video uploaded by environmental group Conservation International. Amid the United Nations Climate Conference in Paris, Ford asks people to take photos with nature using the hashtag #INeednature. According to the group, these selfies will serve as a reminder to world leaders converging in Paris that nature is “at least 30 percent of the solution” to the global problem of climate change.

5. This LEGO vending machine dispenses McNuggets

Where has this product been our whole lives?!! Astonishing Studios has created a vending machine made of LEGOs that actually dispenses McNuggets (complete with packaging and dipping sauce). To get your nugget, you must drop a €2 coin, and it won't accept any other currency. There's another downside: It can only hold two boxes of McNuggets...which, come to think of it, might not be a bad thing for your waistline.

6. P-Noy wants a “Bora experience” after his presidency

When he steps down as president in June 2016, P-Noy says he wants to chill on the shores of Boracay, because believe it or not, he’s only been there once—and for a government project inauguration. “You know, last night I was talking to somebody, and I said everybody in the Philippines would probably have a Bora experience. Hopefully, it is still an experience that I can experience,” P-Noy said in a media forum on December 11. He will probably wake up late on his first day as Noynoy without the “P,” and will not read any newspaper as he wants to be free of any pressure that day, he said. He also plans to go to the Saint Jude Shrine near Malacañang more often because "it might help [with his love life]."

7. COMELEC cancels Poe’s COC for 2016 presidential elections

Sen. Grace Poe faces another setback in her presidential campaign as the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) First Division has cancelled her Certificate of Candidacy (COC) today, December 11. The poll body ruled in favor of the petitions filed by former Sen. Francisco Tatad, Prof. Antonio Contreras, and former UE Law Dean Amado Valdez, with a two-to-one vote. Poe took her sentiments to Facebook, saying, “We submitted evidence of my citizenship and residence, putting our full faith in a just process. It is sad that the COMELEC First Division has chosen to ignore the facts just to deny me the chance to better serve our countrymen, and to also deny our people their choices in an open election.” Poe assured the public that she is still a candidate and will continue to appeal to the COMELEC en banc for reconsideration. This is a different case from the cancellation of Poe’s COC by the COMELEC Second Division last December 1, in favor of the petition filed by lawyer Estrella Elamparo.

8. Weather update: New tropical depression to enter PAR on Saturday

According to PAGASA, the low pressure area outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has strengthened into a tropical depression and is expected to enter by Saturday morning. Once it does, it will be named "Nonoy," and while it likely won't make landfall, it will affect Visayas and Mindanao. PAGASA is expecting one more cyclone to enter PAR before the end of 2016.
