VP Binay supports Pacquiao's stand on same-sex marriage
Binay also says he'll "abide and follow the position of the Catholic Church" on the matter.
(SPOT.ph) Vice President Jejomar Binay, who is running for the presidency under the United Nationalist Alliance, has come to the defense of Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao after the latter earned the ire of the LGBT community for his comments on same-sex marriage.
Binay said Pacquiao, who is running as a senatorial candidate under his slate, only made the comments as he was God-fearing, CNN Philippines reported.
“We’ll have to go back to who is Manny Pacquiao now. Maka-Diyos na maka-Diyos si Manny Pacquiao,” he said.
Aside from being a boxing icon and politician, Pacquiao is known to be a devout Christian. Binay also said that he supported Pacquiao’s stand against same-sex marriage.
“I will abide and follow the position of the Catholic Church on that matter,” he said.
Pacquiao made the controversial statement in a TV interview where he said LGBT members were worse than animals.“Common sense lang. Makakita ka ba ng any animals na lalaki sa lalaki o babae sa babae? Mas mabuti pa ‘yong hayop marunong kumilala kung lalaki ang lalaki o babae kung babae,” he said.
“Ngayon kung lalaki sa lalaki o babae sa babae eh mas masahol pa sa hayop ang tao,” he added.
Pacquiao has since publicly apologized through a video post saying that it was not his intention to put down the LGBT community, but that he retains his stand against same-sex marriage.
