Meet the first female LRT driver
Say hello to Kathleen Dela Paz, LRT-1 operator!
(SPOT.ph) For the first time ever, the Light Rail Transit 1 now has a female driver operating their decades-old train system.
Twenty-six-year-old Kathleen Dela Paz, who had her first day on the job on August 9, passed the rigorous driving test because of her technical skills and determination. According to her, the experience was a challenge.
“At first, I was nervous but it was great when they finally allowed me to drive on my own. I liked seeing passengers smile every time they see me, a woman operating the trains,” she told Inquirer.
Dela Paz is a graduate of the the Pamantasang ng Lungsod ng Maynila with a course in Hotel and Restaurant Management. Some say that due to this, she is not the best choice for the job since she doesn’t have a background in engineering.
“Wag naman sila matakot kasi nag-training naman kami. Kaya alam naman namin kung paano gagawin 'yong trabaho namin,” she said.
Dela Paz, like 29 other individuals from Project Arangkada, completed a 40-day training course. The program increased the number of Light Rail Transit 1 (LRT-1) drivers to 146. Aside from the train drivers, 25 station supervisors and 105 tellers were also hired in an effort to add more LRT-1 trips.
