Holiday Shoppers, Take Note of the New Mall Hours

'Tis the season to be jolly...and bear with traffic.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority says that malls in Metro Manila have agreed to cooperate with the agency in a bid to manage traffic this coming holiday season. The announcement comes after the agency met with mall operators.

From October 15, 2017 to January 15, 2018, malls along all major thoroughfares will operate from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. only, while delivery hours will be adjusted to 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Perishable goods are exempted as they shouldn't be compromised, the MMDA adds. What's more, malls have agreed to refrain from holding sales during Fridays.

Among the mall operators who've agreed to the measures set by the MMDA are Ayala Malls, Robinsons Malls, Power Plant Mall, Shangri-La Plaza, and SM Malls. The MMDA says that "everyone has committed 100%."

Despite this, the agency does acknowledge that it doesn't have the power to impose these policies on private companies, saying the best move was to ask for their participation and commitment. "If they don't comply, we can't fine them," MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago said in a phone interview.

It's good to see both the private sector and government working together to mitigate Manila's traffic situation. Cross your fingers—hopefully, we can spend more time shopping and less time stuck in our cars this Christmas season.
