This Is Your Chance to Hoard Books by Calvino, Kundera, and Pamuk
And other European writers!
(SPOT.ph) E.L. James and Lang Leav are easy to spot in book stores; but if you're looking for old time classics and quality reads by modern writers from all over the world, it would take more than a dash of luck. It's a good thing that European Union National Institutes for Culture and National Book Store are coming together to bring a much-wider offering of European literature to Filipino readers through the European Literature Fair. The three-week event is scheduled from April 4 to 21 at select National Book Store branches.
"I personally find it a unique opportunity to exemplify the awe-inspiring assortment of the European literary scene, and show that European authors cater to a multitude of literary tastes, and a variety of genres covering many literary styles. It is also to show how closely and interwoven the cultural heritage of Europe and the Philippines is, regardless of distance," said Czech Ambassador Jaroslav Olša, Jr. about this much-awaited fair.
This is your chance to hoard timeless works by Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes, English poet William Shakespeare, and Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. Contemporary books by Italian author Italo Calvino, Portuguese José Saramago, German Günter Grass, and Paris-based Czech writer Milan Kundera are also gracing the shelves of local book stores. It's also the perfect opportunity to go wild on hard-to-find poetry books by Polish Nobel awardees Czeslaw Milosz and Wislawa Szymborska, Portuguese Fernando Pessoa, and Austrian Rainer Maria Rilke. British author Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series and Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher series will also be sitting beside J.K. Rowling´s Harry Potter books.
