This Collaborative Podcast Sheds Light on the Importance of Mental Health
Mental Health Hour exposes listeners to varying perspectives on mental health.
(SPOT.ph) With the approval of the Philippine Mental Health Law, things are looking hopeful for Filipinos struggling with mental illness. Several organizations have come together to advocate for more nuanced perceptions on mental health issues. Take for example Mental Health Hour, a podcast launched in September 2017, which aims to promote mental health awareness by emphasizing its importance and sharing personal narratives of those who live with mental health struggles.
Mental Health Hour is a collaborative effort between four local mental health advocate groups, namely: Mental Health PH, Light Your Way: A Mental Health Movement, Tala: Mental Wellness, and Silakbo PH. Each organization chooses a mental health topic they’d like to highlight, and they take turns in producing an episode. This resulted in the podcast covering a wide range of topics and varying perspectives on mental wellness, such as the importance of psychiatrists and guidance counselors, psychotrauma of disaster survivors, benefits of creating art for one’s mental well-being, stories of teachers of kids with autism, various ways to practice self-love, and other mental health struggles.
The podcast regularly invites guests well-versed in mental health issues—such as Dr. Ronald del Castillo of UP Manila, therapist Ronald Recio of St. Scholastica College’s Manila Hope Clinic, and visual artists Art Dioxide and Tired Onigiri—to share their knowledge and experiences. With its noble mission to set the record straight on mental issues, Mental Health Hour proves that beautiful things can come out of synergy.
