LOOK: 2019's New Emojis Embrace Diversity and Inclusivity
They'll be released next month!
(SPOT.ph) Texting is a convenient way to communicate with people, but it's also pretty difficult to convey tone and feeling. To minimize misunderstandings, some people turn to adding an emoji or two to their messages. If you're one of those who regularly use them, we have good news for you: A total of 230 new emojis will be added in March, and they're more diverse than before!
In a move to be more inclusive, the Unicode Consortium is adding new emojis that are geared to be more representative of race, gender, and culture. There will be more skin tones for the human emojis, and if that isn't rad enough, they're also adding inter-racial couples in the mix, as well as gender-neutral and gender-inclusive couples holding hands. The consortium is also making attempts to better represent people with disabilities with the addition of mechanical arms, hearing aids, wheelchairs, and even a guide dog.
Aside from the guide dog, they're also adding emojis featuring otters, flamingos, orangutans, and sloth. For expressions, they're adding a yawning face emoji and a pinching hand one that's available in a range of skin tones.
A lot of random objects will also be added, including an axe, a razor, and a band-aid, among others.
