(SPOT.ph) The Metro's biggest book fair may still be months away, but artist-run communities never run out of reasons to celebrate (and sell) books. Take, for example, the upcoming Komura;, which is an all-women gathering of independent publishers, specialty bookstores, game developers, writers, artists, illustrators, musicians, filmmakers, and zine makers around the Philippines. If it sounds like a big deal, that's because it is! The one-day book fair is happening on May 18, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., at Warehouse Eight in Makati City. Entrance fee is at P200.
Komura;—inspired by the Komura Memorial Library in Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore—is a refuge for authors, artists, and small presses who are often relegated to the sidelines during mainstream book-selling events or not available at all in commercial bookstores. It was founded in 2017 by Kayla Dionisio and Czyka Tumaliuan who decided to include other storytelling activities like poetry reading, film screenings, and even discussions about video games, to your usual book fair. The upcoming Komura; will also host talks on women's issues.
