(SPOT.ph) The 30th Southeast Asian Games has proven to be an absolute goldmine for Filipino athletes with a total of 119 medals as of the morning of day five of the regional meet. It's an impressive number, especially when compared to the 120 we garnered for the entirety of the 2017 run, and it seems our solons are taking note of the excellent work our athletes are pulling. Members of the House of Representatives have agreed to dip into their own pockets to raise a P10 million cash reward for Filipino athletes who struck gold in the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
Under House Resolution 568, members of congress have decided to "deduct individual pledges from their salaries for January 2020 as additional incentives to Filipino gold medal winners in the 30th SEA Games." Their mark is a grand total of P10 million, according to a report by ABS-CBN News.
Aside from the incentive to be granted by the lower chamber, SEA Games gold medalists are also assured a P300,000 cash reward thanks to Republic Act 10699, a.k.a. the "Sports Benefits and Incentives Act of 2001." Silver medalists should also receive a P150,000 reward, while bronze medalists get P60,000.
Our national athletes have been giving it their all for the SEA Games, with 56 gold medals, 41 silver and 22 bronze ones as of writing. We're only halfway through the games, and with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics looming, we can't wait to see what else our athletes can bring!
