SPOT.ph Picks: The Best Sunscreens for Face and Body
Never, ever skip the sunscreen!
(SPOT.ph) The blistering summer heat is a slap-in-the-face reminder that you should never, ever, ever skip the sunscreen…unless you want to subject yourself to skin-aging and a higher risk of skin cancer—and nobody wants that, right? While it’s good practice to apply sunscreen every day before doing your makeup, you should also remember that you have to reapply every two hours, no matter how high your sunscreen's SPF. And since the skin is the largest organ of the human body, you must treat the rest of it with the same care you give your face.
There are three kinds of ultraviolet rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC. The UVA rays are responsible for skin-aging and they can penetrate through windows, which is why it’s important to apply sunscreen even when you’re staying indoors. UVB rays, on the other hand, are the rays that cause your skin to burn but cannot penetrate glass. So when you get sunburnt at the beach, the UVB rays are to blame (and maybe your lack of SPF application). Finally, the UVC rays—which don’t get much attention—are actually the deadliest and most damaging type of radiation…and this is why we should pay more attention to our ozone layer (which is sadly getting depleted) because it’s the only thing that’s preventing UVC rays from reaching the earth’s surface.
Now that you know all about the dangers of not putting on sunscreen, here are some terms you should look for when buying sunscreen: SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and it shields skin from UVB rays, meaning it protects the skin from burning. PA+ indicates the protection grade against the UVA rays, which means the more + signs you see, the higher protection you get from skin-aging. Finally, sunscreens with Broad Spectrum protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays.
If you’ve committed the number-one skin sin multiple times and are now shaken to the core about the negative effects the ultraviolet rays have on your skin, then our job here is almost done.
Below, we list the best sunscreens for your face and for your body:
UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel (P532) from Biore
A cult-favorite among skincare junkies, Biore's UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel boasts a rich yet lightweight formula that feels just like water on the skin. It has SPF 50 and PA++++, which means it provides maximum protection from both UVA and UVB rays. The best part is that they've reformulated the sunscreen so it doesn't leave an annoying white cast. It can be used for both the face and body, but we recommend using this variant for the body because of its thicker consistency. For the face, we suggest using Biore's Aqua Rich Watery Essence with SPF 50 and PA++++, which is lighter than the Watery Gel variant.
Ultra Light Daily UV Defense Aqua Gel (P2,100/30ml; P3,100/60ml) from Kiehl’s
Perfect for everyday use, Kiehl's Ultra Light Daily UV Defense Aqua Gel is specially formulated for humid conditions so that it doesn't clog pores or make your skin feel greasy. It contains SPF 50 with PA++++ plus it's also anti-pollution, which is great for those who are always out in the city. The best part is it promises to protect you for up to eight hours so you won't have to keep reapplying every two hours. Though if you're a lot like us, we'd be reapplying all throughout the day just for good measure.
