Women workers from Labor Party support RH Bill; calls Catholic Church’s statement on contraception as a form of abortion "irresponsible&quo
The Partido ng Manggagawa (also known as Labor Party) group said in a statement that working women support the passage of the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill, reports ABS-CBNNews.com. The group said, "The RH Bill is critical given the impact of the global financial crisis on working people and the poor, especially women... (We) support the RH bill on the basis of women’s right to reproductive health care."
Citing statistics from the 2008 National Demographic and Health Survey and the 2006 Family Planning Survey, the group said a significant number of women "want fewer children than they actually have, consider a two-child family as the ideal, and would like to plan their families but lack information and access to do so."
The party list group also said that the "precise and regular use of contraceptives can decrease abortion rates by as much as 85 percent according to Allan Guttmacher Institute." They added, "As to the Catholic Church’s irresponsible statement that modern contraception is a form of abortion, this distorts the scientific fact that pregnancy happens at implantation and not during conception as it boldly claims."
