AFP to promote Manny Pacquiao to lieutenant colonel?
(SPOT.ph) From champion boxer to singer, actor and congressman, Manny Pacquiao may again add another title to his name-lieutenant colonel, that is, if he fulfills the necessary requirements such as a bachelor’s degree, reports Manila Bulletin.
"If he can meet the requirements to qualify, definitely we will be recommending him for promotion to lieutenant colonel as a reservist," said Army Chief Lt. Gen. Arturo Ortiz, adding, however, that the president must approve the recommendation. According to the report, Pacquiao is currently studying business management at the Notre Dame of Dadiangas in General Santos City.
Lieutenant colonel, said Ortiz, is the lowest rank given to legislators in the reserve forces. Army spokesperson Col. Antonio Parlade Jr. added that since Pacquiao enlisted as a sergeant in the Reserve Forces in 2006, he is already qualified, however, protocol must still be followed.
Ortiz bared their plans to promote the Sarangani representative yeseterday, May 31, when the Philippine Army feted Pacquiao in "Testimonial Parade and Review"-an honor normally bestowed upon senior government or military officials and foreign dignitaries. "Very exceptional si Manny kaya binigyan natin siya ng testimonial review (Manny is very exceptional; that’s why we gave him the testimonial review)," said Ortiz.
According to ABS-CBN News, Pacquiao was given a medallion normally reserved for senior military officers and foreign dignitaries; a miniature figure of Filipino hero Andres Bonifacio; and a plaque recognizing his "outstanding accomplishment which brought lasting honor to the Philippine Army and the Filipino people as a whole."
