Whale shark found dead in Calabanga, Camarines Sur

(SPOT.ph) A 26-foot whale shark (butanding) was discovered dead on Sunday morning on the shores of Barangay Bonot-Sta. Rosa, Calabanga, Camarines Sur, reports ABS-CBN News. Locals suspect that the whale shark had been trapped among fish corrals before dying.

Local fisherman Joel Panuela found the whale shark on his way to check his fish corrals. It took him and the other residents about two hours to drag the whale shark to the shore due to the low tide. Warned against slaughtering the animal, the Calabanga government agreed to bury the whale and almost one hundred residents helped in digging the grave.

This is the second time in two months that a whale shark was discovered dead on the shores of Camarines Sur. The first was in April in nearby Cabusao town. Meanwhile, in Antique, a six-foot long, one-and a-half-year-old whale shark was stabbed dead six times and its tail was chopped off.
