P-Noy’s SONA to focus on "social transformation"; protesters to parade giant rotten "Penoy" egg
(SPOT.ph) President Noynoy Aquino's State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, July 25, will focus more on "social transformation" instead of new slogans, reports GMA News. "The President will talk about transforming our society," said Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Secretary Ricky Carandang. The SONA will be at the Batasan Complex, Quezon City, at 4 p.m.
Refusing to divulge any more information, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte instead added that Aquino's speech will be in Filipino and will be supported by an audiovisual presentation. She also appealed to policemen and potential protesters who are expected to flock the address. "We hope there will be no untoward incidents... We hope there will be order and the demonstrations will be peaceful," she said, reminding the public that Aquino has five more years to fulfill his campaign promises.
While there have been no specific threats to Aquino's SONA, about 700 soldiers will be deployed around the Batasan Complex in addition to the police force. According to the GMA report, battle tanks will also be on standby.
Artists, meanwhile, have made known their plan to parade a 14-foot giant rotten egg along Commonwealth Avenue today, reports ABS-CBN News. Calling their creation "Penoy"-a play on the President’s moniker P-Noy-UGATLahi Artist Collective chair Crisanto de Leon said it was a reflection of Aquino's performance during his first year. "Ramdam na natin na hindi kayang panindigan ni Noynoy ang pagbabagong sinasabi niya, at bagkus ay lalo pang naghirap ang mamamayan sa ilalim ng kanyang pamumuno (We feel that Noynoy cannot live up to his promises of change, instead more people are suffering under his leadership)."
De Leon added the egg symbolizes the grade Aquino has received for his first year in office. "Itlog ang grado sa kanya (His grade is an egg)," de Leon said, referring to the local euphemism for failure.
