In today’s news feeds, SPOT.ph posted one entry based on an Inquirer.net article, "DENR pushes homestretch voting for Puerto Princesa Underground River." One of our readers posted a comment calling our attention to the fact that the New7Wonders Foundation, which launched the search for the world’s New 7 Wonders of Nature, has been hit with controversy.

To verify the information, SPOT.ph checked out two of the links posted on the sites referred to by the concerned reader.

One link led to the press release posted on the website of the president of Maldives. Titled "Maldives withdraws from New7Wonders campaign," the statement read: "In deciding to withdraw the Maldives from the New7Wonders contest, the Cabinet rejected the organiser's demand for expensive license fees and sponsorship packages, not included in the initial agreement of participation, in order to compete in the remainder of the competition. They noted the irregularities and lack of transparency in calculating competitor rankings at different stages of the competition."

The other link led to an article on The Jakarta Globe, "Indonesia under ’attack’ by New7Wonders Foundation: Tourism Ministry." The article quoted ministry official I Gde Pitana, who said, "I am asking the people of Indonesia to think clearly that there is something behind the organization's attempt to ’force’ Indonesia to host the announcement of the New7Wonders."

However, the New 7 Wonders site still lists Indonesia and Maldives’ entries among the 28 finalists, along with the Puerto Princesa Underground River.

The SPOT.ph reader also referred to a travel blogger named Red Hunt, who has written about the New 7 Wonders of Nature controversy.
