These Shirts Are a Cool Mashup of Manila’s Love for Dining and Design
They give a whole new meaning to wearing your heart on your sleeve!
(SPOT.ph) It’s no secret that we like to eat. Whether you think that about Filipinos in general or Metro Manila city-dwellers specifically, you’d be right on both counts. How many Friday-evening group chat conversations have revolved around deciding where to have dinner? How many times have you argued with friends about the precise mid-point between where each person works so that you could choose a restaurant that everyone would agree on? These were just two of the things that made living in the Metro that much more fun…and two things that had to be put on pause because of the pandemic.
If you’re missing eating out with friends at one of Manila’s many, many great restaurants, you’re not alone—and these shirts prove it. Manila Takeout, as their website states, pairs “iconic Philippine restaurants with acclaimed Filipino designers” to create designs for shirts that you can buy for a limited time. All proceeds, they add, are to be donated to the respective restaurants and their service teams who have been affected by the COVID-19 quarantine.
The project was initiated by “two girls in opposite time zones”—we’ve reached out but haven’t heard back, but designer and illustrator Dan Matutina, who was tapped to work on one of the shirts, talked about how he came up with his design in a Facebook post: “Just wanted to create a galaxy where the main planets are ‘UBE,’ ‘CHZ’ and ‘AVO’—Milky Way's best-selling ice cream flavors. The other objects floating in space are abstraction of halo-halo ingredients.” We asked him which his favorite flavor is among the three and we’re partial to his pick: cheese.
