These Adorable Plush Toys Celebrate Filipino Athletes Who Competed at the Tokyo Olympics
You can buy them online!
(SPOT.ph) Over the last few weeks—from the final days of July to the first few days of August—Filipinos across the world watched in awe as our athletes competed in various sporting events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, culminating in what is now the Philippines' most successful Olympic run in history. The country took home a total of four medals, including its first-ever Olympic gold and the athletes who trained and competed to bring pride to the nation have quickly turned into celebrities—and more importantly, symbols of hard work and inspiration. In honor of the history-making, gender norm-shattering Olympic performances we all witnessed this year at the 2020 Summer Games, local brand Popjunklove created Chibi Filipino Athletes—adorable plush toys inspired by the Philippines' Olympic athletes!
For those who are unfamiliar, “chibi” is a Japanese slang term referring to something small. It’s used to describe a stylized form of character drawing wherein figures are illustrated with small bodies and large facial expressions, creating a distinctly cutesy look. Popjunklove reimagined some of the most talked about Filipina athletes at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in this style and turned them into mini stuffed toys.
Check out these adorable chibi plush toys inspired by Filipino Olympians who competed in Tokyo 2020:
No one in Philippine sports made headlines at this year's Olympics quite like weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who, despite a long and difficult journey to the 2020 Summer Games, brought home the Philippines' first-ever Olympic gold medal. Popjunklove created a mini plush toy of Diaz wearing the blue ensemble she competed in while holding a barbell in one hand and the Philippine flag in the other. A small felt version of Diaz's historical gold medal can be seen adorning the toy's neck. Plus, look closely and you'll see that the chibi is wearing lipstick, which Diaz famously puts on during competitions and training sessions to boost her confidence.
Street skateboarder and photobombing extraordinaire Margielyn Didal may not have taken home any Olympic medals this time around, but the Cebu native certainly won the hearts of sports fans across the world thanks to her unwavering positive energy. Fittingly, the plush toy modeled after her sports a medal with a smiley face on it—if the Olympics had an award for good vibes, she would totally deserve it. The toy is also decked out in the entire outfit Didal wore at the 2020 Summer Games: a white T-shirt with rainbow stripes across, orange pants, and a blue cap. The only thing missing would be her custom sneakers!
Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio earned a silver medal for her incredible Olympic performance at the 2020 Summer Games. She was lauded not just for her stunning athleticism, but also for her fighting spirit and dedication to her family. This chibi plush toy inspired by her shows the athelete rocking the all-red outfit she donned when she won competed in Tokyo as well as the white boxing wraps that supported her hands. And of course, her shiny silver medal is front and center.
