These Eco-Friendly Sneakers Will Let You Shop with a Clear Conscience
The French brand produces stylish footwear through ethical means.
(SPOT.ph) As shoppers, we have become more conscious of our choices. We don’t just look at the brand, quality, or the price tag anymore; we try to find out if the stuff we want to buy are also eco-friendly and sustainable. Being ethical is cool, and brands are catching up.
For sneaker brand Veja, however, being ethical has been a thing since the beginning.
After seeing the working conditions inside the factory of a French brand in China in 2003, Veja’s would-be founders, Sébastien Kopp and François-Ghislain Morillion, decided that they would set up their own business—but vowed that they would do it right.
The two Frenchmen spent months sourcing raw materials and working with craftsmen in Brazil. They put together their first pairs of sneakers in a unionized factory in Porto Alegre and shipped them off to a Parisian firm for distribution.
Kopp and Morillion chose the Portuguese word for “look” as the brand name for their ethical and eco-friendly sneakers, and sold the first pairs in 2005. Veja was born.
Veja comes in various styles for men, women, and kids. The sneaker line boasts retro sporting silhouettes: basketball sneakers, tennis sneakers, runners, and casual shoes for everyday wear—in different cuts and colors.
