Designer Rafe Totengco, newly appointed creative director of Nine West, to receive 2010 Filipino Presidential Award

New York-based Filipino accessories designer Rafe Totengco will receive the 2010 Filipino Presidential Award on December 14, according to the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO).

Totengco will receive the award in the "Pamana ng Filipino" category for bringing "the country honor and recognition through excellence and distinction in the pursuit of his work." Awardees under this category have been determined to demonstrate "consistent exceptional or outstanding performance, innovation, social consciousness, dedication and commitment," says the CFO site.

Along with other individuals and groups including five other "Pamana ng Filipino" awardees, Totengco will receive the recognition from President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III at the Malacañang Palace.

Totengco was recently appointed creative director for handbags for The Jones Group Inc., which sells brands like Nine West, Vintage America, Jones New York, Stuart Weitzman and Robert Rodriguez. Women’s Wear Daily quoted Jones president Richard Dickson as saying Totengco "has a gift for world-class design."

Totengco’s successful handbag and accessories line Rafe New York was launched in 1997. A member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America since 1998, he has received awards such as Best Accessories Designer from the Accessories Council and Rising Star from Fashion Group International.
