National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera, Concerned Artists of the Philippines defend "blasphemous" art exhibit

(SPOT.ph) Members of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP) have expressed their support for Mideo Cruz and the other artists behind the controversial "Kulo" art exhibit, which featured unconventional use of religious imagery. The group has also defended the Cultural Center of the Philippines, who is also under fire for allowing the display of so-called "blasphemous" and "sacrilegious" artworks.

National Artist for Literature and CAP chair Bienvenido Lumbera announced in a statement: "We support the CCP, specially its Visual Arts unit headed by Karen Flores, and the organizers of 'Kulo' for upholding freedom of expression as guaranteed by the 1987 Constitution." Quoting the law, the group said that Article 3 of the fourth section of the Constitution states that "no law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances."

While CAP acknowledged the Church's right to speak against the exhibit, the group also noted that such opposition shows "the religious fascism of the friars of Rizal's time and certainly unacceptable in the 21st century." "Kulo," which includes Cruz's "Poleteismo," features Jesus Christ wearing bunny ears and phallic symbols mixed in with religious images. The exhibit will run until August 21.

The CCP will hold an open forum on "Kulo" tomorrow, August 5, at 2 p.m.
