Medical experts debunk anti-RH bill supporters’ arguments on contraceptives

(SPOT.ph) A representative from the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as other medical experts, corrected claims made by detractors of the controversial Reproductive Health Bill, reports Interaksyon. According to WHO, there is scientific evidence that prove artificial contraception is effective in preventing pregnancy and improving women’s health.

Anti-RH supporters reject the bill because of its alleged promotion of the use of abortifacients which they define as "any device, drug, formulation, substance, practice, or procedure intended to damage, injure, interfere with the development, endanger, or cause the death of the unborn child or otherwise induce abortion," reports ABS-CBN News. The experts, however, clarified that contraceptives are not abortifacients-which is what is being endorsed in the bill.

Dr. Ernesto Domingo differentiated abortifacients and contraceptives: "Contraceptives help prevent pregnancy while abortifacients terminate an established pregnancy," he said, adding that none of the FDA-approved contraceptives double as abortifacients. Meanwhile, WHO representative Dr. Soe Nyunt-U said contraceptives are safe even if used for 10 years. He added they can even lessen the risk of breast and cervical cancer contrary to what RH detractors earlier suggested.
