(SPOT.ph) Space-saving shelves line part of the walls that aren’t occupied with artwork at Uno Morato. Not that the books on the shelves aren’t masterpieces too. There’s no music blasting from speakers. The lights don’t blink and are bright enough for reading but ambient enough for a dramatic photograph. There’s a stack of chairs to the left of the entrance; guitars and other musical instruments are on the far side of the room. Electric sockets are everywhere, and on the menu? A liter of Kalsada Coffee (P180). Are you getting an image of a place that you can hole up in for hours? Good.
Welcome to Uno Morato. No dress code...or special code of conduct.
If you’re winding down and you want to skip the caffeine, beer is an option. You can have two if you like. They don’t charge obscenely for a cold one because they actually want you to stay and be a regular. Maybe play HeroClix with them on Tuesday Game Night? Watch a movie or gig sometime? Listen to poetry? Read poetry? Discover a book? Make friends?
They can actually hear each other.
Adam David, Harris Guevarra, and Carljoe Javier wanted a space where all that could be possible. It sounds daunting but all they really had to do was open a room (it’s a room) that caters to creative people. Allot some space for consignment, assign a corner for readings and music, and add some chairs. It’s still a business of course, and the trio are working out the kinks (more reliable WiFi: now available!) but the goal is clear enough: that the place won’t make you feel like you should go home and change (your clothes or your entire personality). Here’s a nice little spot in QC where you can actually hear yourself think and enjoy a conversation. People actually come here to talk. About books. Comics. Games. Romance. Life.
This is aside from the fact that this bar/bookstore quite obviously celebrates independently created art in all forms. Workshops, art auctions, organic-food market mornings, book launches...all of the things that writers, musicians, artists, and even scientists have been doing and creating while nobody was looking just acquired a stage. We’re looking forward to everything that’s about to happen here.
