Pampanga

(SPOT.ph) Because Clark is an International airport, the town has exceeded its own reputation as a culinary playground; the spectrum runs from Kapampangan home cooking to K-cuisine and nearly everything in between. Who knew that there are more than enough restaurants for one to plan an entire weekend of trying different cuisines, and still not run out of options? You can even plan a steak crawl with the number of steak joints in the area.

For SPOT Out of Town's first trip, we went around Clark to narrow things down for you, curating a more edited set of dining recommendations that covers Pampanga’s best, to Korean staples, to steakhouse stops, and everything else worth saving stomach space for.

Consuelo (Photo by Paul Sugano)

New in the block of barn stables turned to restaurants is Consuelo. Owned by Chef Vince Garcia (the same brains with a passion for food behind other dining concepts such as Chef Baboy, Rainforest Kitchen, and VG Bakery + Bistro), Consuelo is a Kapampangan restaurant that's a great place to eat, whether you're from Pampanga looking for comforting lutong bahay, or a non-local wanting to introduce yourself to the cuisine.

The Fried Hito with Buroo (P700) and Pork Sisig (P650) are no-brainers if you're looking for Kapampangan food, but they also have Kare-Kare (P900), which is a classic executed really well: sweet and nutty sauce coating all the meat cuts, and pairs well with the restaurant's housemade bagoong. There's also the Consuelo Derang Manuk (P790), grilled chicken that's paired with a refreshingly sweet atsara. Thankfully, you can buy a bottle of it for P250 as pasalubong.

Wu Xing at Clark Marriott Hotel (Photo by Paul Sugano)

If you’re hunting for a solid Chinese restaurant, there’s an old-school rule that still holds up: follow the people who actually know the food. In this case, Chinese tourists and Chinese-food fans alike tend to gravitate toward Clark Marriott’s swanky Wu Xing.

And the restaurant’s popularity largely comes down to one thing: its Traditional Wood-Roasted Beijing Duck (P3,880 for half, P5,800 for whole). The restaurant has a full tableside production—the kind of knife work that is ASMR-worthy—as the duck is expertly carved and portioned into crisp skin, breast, and leg meat. It arrives with the usual essentials: sweet soybean paste, cucumber, leek, and soft Chinese pancakes that wrap everything together.

When it comes to the appetizers, you should try Wu Xing's impressive Siu Mai (P380), which are steamed pork- and shrimp-stuffed dumplings topped with fish roe. They’re juicy, meaty, and emotionally impossible to share.

Kynd Dining (Photo by Paul Sugano)

For the more hidden gems, you can go on a 20 to 30-minute drive outside Clark, which will take you to KYND Dining: a restaurant with Bali-inspired interiors, offering a vantage point for sunsets as it gradients into a starry sky.

The menu is quite extensive—with the majority of the dishes leaning more modern Filipino, but with a few fusion dishes here and there. You can start with the intimidating gigantic Okoy (P350), which has opapaya, kamote, kalabasa, carrots, and shrimp; or the Chicharones (P280) that are pork deep-fried to crunchy perfection—and, honestly, can be your main dish, just order it with a side of rice.

Our other KYND Dining recommendations include the Pizza Negra (P590), which has an inked dough for its canvas; the Japanese Aglio Olio (P420), a spicy pasta dish that gets flavor from sesame oil, garlic, and seafood; the Pork Bistek Dome (P450) that is half delicious, half dramatic with its mashed potato dome you pour the hot bistek sauce to reveal the tender meat hiding beneath it.

Plus points: If you want to linger a little longer over both the food and the view, KYND Dining also offers villas you can rent.

Grill Seoul is one of Clark’s go-to spots for Korean barbecue—not the unlimited kind, but the à la carte version that makes you pay attention to the quality of the meat. The raw beef cuts include the likes of Marinated Grilled Beef Ribs (P1,100/200 grams) and Aged Grilled Beef Chuck Flap Tail (P1,250/180 grams); while pork options include Marinated Grilled Pork Neck (P450/280 grams) and Aged Grilled Pork Belly (P330/200 grams).

Should you need variety on the grill, consider the Marinated Grilled Chicken Drumsticks (P350), Grilled Tiger Prawns (P800/four pieces), and Grilled Cheese Sausage (P400/two pieces). Or you can simply pair the grilled meat with a bowl of soup or stew, like the Kimchi Stew (P330) for more bold flavors, or you can go for less heat with the Beef Short Rib Soup (P400)

Barn by Conti's (Photo from Facebook/Barn by Conti's)

You can always go to a nearby Conti's Bakeshop & Restaurant—after all, there are several branches within Metro Manila alone. But the reason you need to go to Barn by Conti's in Clark, Pampanga is that they have an expanded menu that goes beyond crowd-favorites like the Mango Bravo and Baked Salmon.

The branch-exclusives you need to try start with the Asian Salad (P345), a sea of greens with playful flavors and textures coming from the roasted corn, fried kani, and fresh, crisp vegetables coated in a tangy-sweet dressing. Transition to a heftier dish with another Barn-exclusive: the Barn Grilled Satay Chicken (P445), which stars charred chicken skewers that pair well with basil rice.

It's good to note that Barn by Conti's is one of the few restaurants in Clark that opens early and serves the morning crowd—an all-day breakfast selection at that, plus Barn-exclusive fun drinks like the Barn Unicorn Latte (P225), Banana Creme Brulee Latte (P245), Purple Ube Latte (P245), and Gingberbread Latte (P245).

If you want to talk about Clark dining institutions, Binulo is widely considered to be one of the OG Kapampangan restaurants in the area. The restaurant first opened in 2011, and has now moved to a new location in Angeles with the same comforting dishes, just served in a more refreshed look.

Binulo has built its reputation around dishes cooked the "binulo" way—a traditional method where food is sealed and slow-cooked inside a fresh bamboo stalk, or bulo. The restaurant showcases this method in three dishes: the Pangat na Ulang (P870), or river prawns steeped in a sour lemongrass broth; the Sabo Camatis (P670), a tomato-forward take on pork sinigang; and the Sinampalukang Manok (P580), where chicken swims in a deeply tangy tamarind soup. Order these with the Binulo Rice (P220), wrapped in banana leaves, to complete the experience.

As for Kapampangan food, Binulo covers staples like the Murcon Kapampangan (P950), a hefty meat roll packed with ground pork, chorizo de Bilbao, and cheese; a classic Kare-Kare (P950) with a savory peanut sauce; and Tidtad (P580), Pampanga’s take on dinuguan. And if you're feeling a little more adventurous, there’s the seasonal Kapampangan dishes like the Kalderetang Kambing (P880), goat stewed in a deeply savory tomato sauce; Kamaro (P700), which are fried mole crickets; and Batute (P550), deep-fried stuffed frogs.

Markt (Photo by Paul Sugano)

Another must-try restaurant tucked inside a Clark hotel is Markt, which you can find on the ground floor of Swissôtel Clark. This is an all-day dining restaurant that highlights more of the European cuisine, hence its German name.

Our Markt recommendations are divided into two: for the meatlovers and seafood fans. For the former, there's the Bratwurst Sausage (P450): two pieces of juicy, well-spiced sausages served on top of a vibrant sea of bellpeppers, onions, and carrots. The steaks are New York Angu Striploin (P1,800) and the New York Anugs Ribeye (P2,500/300 grams) are great grilled steak options. You can't go wrong with either.

For those who love seafood, Markt is also known for their All-You-Can-Sea buffet—all for the steal price of P2,999 per person. This includes unlimited access to lobster, tuna, salmon, crabs, mussels, prawns, and more—which you can have fresh, baked, grilled, or tossed in pasta or turned into a proper ulam. The catch? The buffet only happens twice a month, with schedules posted on the Swissôtel website.

House of Chops is one of those restaurants in Clark that always gets packed with hungry packs of carnivores wanting to dig their knives and forks into their bestselling, reasonably priced, good-for-sharing meaty dishes and pasta plates.

The mains you can choose from include Crackling Pork Belly Roast with Miso Butter (P1,100), USDA Choice Angus Ribeye Steak (P1,990), US Country Fried Steak with Sausage Gravy (P975), Slow-Roasted US Beef Belly with Peppercorn Gravy (P1,350), and US Corned Beef Brisket with Cabbage (P1,350). You can go for the usual sides of steak rice, mashed potatoes, or a creamy corn and spinach with whatever dish your meat-loving heart gravitates toward.

Hola Parade is one of those Clark spots that blew up during the pandemic and has sustained its popularity years after—most likely because it figured out that people love a restaurant with rooftop views, live music, and good food on the menu. One can say it’s part restaurant, part hangout spot, and part “let’s see where the night goes.”

For date nights, you can get a bottle of wine and order steak. They have the Tomahawk Steak (P14,500) that has 1,200 grams of meat served with soup and salad, or for something more wallet-friendly, the Hot Stone Ribeye Steak (P3,950), which has the USDA Premium Angus Beef, a Tiger Prawn, and U.S. Scallop served with chimichurri, a spicy pesto sauce, and gravy.

If you're there with friends, you can go for classic Italian pasta bowls like Pomodoro (P650) and Carbonara (P850), and pizzas like Margherita (P890) and Gorgonzola (P890). Portions are built for sharing, which helps justify ordering more than you planned.

And if you're there just to catch up on work or have some me time, they also have finger food you can nibble on in between sips of coffee or cocktails—whichever your go-to is. Don't worry, we won't judge you.

If it isn’t clear enough yet: Clark might as well be the country’s unofficial capital of steak-ations—where you can hop from one joint to another like it’s a perfectly normal thing. And one stop worth adding to your crawl is Rare Bar & Grill, yet another steak joint tucked inside a hotel in Clark, this time at Quest Plus Conference Center along Mimosa Drive.

What sets Rare Bar & Grill apart, though, is the atmosphere: a step above the rest, leaning into a more polished, almost fine-casual dining experience. This restaurant is all about steaks and dry-aged cuts done right—finished over a charcoal grill and a Josper oven for that extra depth of flavor.

Meat lovers can choose between the Black Onyx Tomahawk MS3, Beef Striploin Steak MB2+, Australian Beef Ribeye MB5+, Black Angus Beef Ribeye MB5+, Beef Flank Steak MB3, and Japanese Wagyu Sirloin A5. We wouldn't be the least surprised if you end up ordering more than one, especially when the options are just too good not to try.

Pair your meat with a lineup of the bar's handcrafted cocktails. Rare Bar & Grill has their own takes on classics, as seen on Ratafia Negroni, West Indies Julep, Red Wood Spritz, Black Smith Martini, Chamomile Whisky Sour, Frontier Fizz, Moscow Fig Mule, and New Orleans Old Fashioned.
