Virgin Labfest 2026: Your Guide to the Plays, Tickets + More

From June 3 to 28, the annual theater festival will be taking over Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP Black Box Theater) for a series of “untried, untested, and unstaged” one-act plays. This year’s festival, Virgin Labfest XXI: Hubo't Hubad, strips down to focus on themes such as adulthood, raw energy, and fearless storytelling. Spotlighting both veteran playwrights and fresh voices, this is your chance to catch Filipino theater at its most vulnerable and unfiltered.

Here is everything you need to know about this year’s Virgin Labfest.

Now in its 21st year, Virgin Labfest offers a front-row seat to some of the best of Philippine contemporary theater. Hubo't Hubad will feature 12 “virgin” scripts by eight new playwrights and four returning playwrights, all highlighting the raw, often messy essence of the human experience. Divided into four main sets, the festival offers a mixed bag of genres ranging from heavy-hitting dramas to absurdist comedies.

1. Password123, Pilipinas321 by Anthony Kim Vergara

• Directed by Norbs Portales

• Cast: Noel Rayos, Gio Gahol, Gie Onida, Earvin Estioco, Miguel de los Santos, Nicole Manlulo

• Synopsis: The story centers on Blackteam, an underground cyberspace operation hiding in plain sight as a tech support center. As his cousin pushes the team toward increasingly troubling methods, a cybersecurity expert is left grappling with his career choices and Filipino identity.

2. Human Rights Story of the Year by Elijah Felice Rosales

• Directed by Nelsito Gomez

• Cast: CJ Navato, Justine Peña

• Synopsis: A reporter is on the verge of accepting a prestigious international award, but a former colleague crashes the farewell party to declare she doesn't deserve the win.

3. Patayin Ang Mga Surot by Floyd Scott Tiogangco

• Directed by Lhorvie Nuevo-Tadioan

• Cast: Donna Cariaga, Lian Silverio

• Synopsis: The play is set on the final, heavy night of the Duterte administration. As an Oplan Tokhang operation rages in the streets outside, a couple stays indoors, obsessively hunting down bedbugs.

1. Balos by Nik Azcuna

• Directed by Cholo Ledesma

• Cast: Vincent Pajara, Heart Puyong, Bong Cabrera, Don Melvin Boongaling, Iman Rahima, Fred Layno

• Synopsis: A wounded fighter stumbles through the doors of a small Marawi hospital. His presence forces four medical workers into a life-or-death choice: do they stay silent to keep their sanctuary safe, or speak up and risk the lives of everyone inside?

2. Haram by Alab Usman

• Directed by Mark Daniel Dalacat

• Cast: Jude Hinumdum, Rey Correjado, Eshei Mesina, Joann Co, Phil Noble

• Synopsis: An intimate look at the intersections of faith and identity, this piece follows three queer Muslims as they navigate the complexities of love across borders.

3. Lualhati by Gab Mactal

• Directed by Mara Paulina Marasigan

• Cast: Jackie Lou Blanco, Angel Aquino, Banaue Miclat, Bea Garcia-Choy, Iana Bernardez, Sarah Monay

• Synopsis: On the final night of a wake, a former nun turned Philosophy professor reunites with a ghost from her past. As the hours tick by, their shared history of faith and forbidden romance resurfaces.

1. Elehiya by Dustin Celestino

• Directed by Ron Capinding

• Cast: Dennis M. Marasigan, John Sanchez, Carlos Siguion-Reyna, Rafa Siguion-Reyna, Yan Yuzon

• Synopsis: In this impressionistic journey, Celestino crafts a series of imagined dialogues between fathers and sons—conversations that were supposed to happen but never did.

2. She’s Electric by Ron Evangelista

• Directed by JP Habac

• Cast: Joshua Cabiladas, Glaiza de Castro, Ybes Bagadiong, Yesh Burce, Aldo Vencilao

• Synopsis: After a reformed womanizer falls head-over-heels, his inner circle unearths a secret that sparks an insightful discussion on the sexual and philosophical nature of modern love.

3. Betamax by Faith Ferrer Lacanlale

• Directed by Sheenly Gener

• Cast: Jam Binay, Jorrybell, Sean Inocencio

• Synopsis: A woman’s life begins to unravel following a car accident, leading to disturbing visions of “human pigs.” As the lines between reality and nightmare blur, the dark secrets of her family are dragged into the light.

1. Footprint by Jerom Canlas

• Directed by Mikko Angeles

• Cast: Jojo Cayabyab, Meryll Soriano, Elijah Canlas, Omar Uddin, Pappel

• Synopsis: In the wake of a family tragedy, a grieving household uses a virtual archive to turn back the clock. As they go through digital footprints, unspoken resentments and truths are also unearthed.

2. Taksyapo! by John Lapus

• Directed by Tuxqs Rutaquio

• Cast: Christian Bables, Mosang

• Synopsis: In Tarlac’s famous rage booth, two strangers find themselves trading stories of heartbreak and romantic disappointment.

3. Buhaghag by Gerald Manuel

• Directed by Tess Jamias

• Cast: Krystle Valentino, Adrienne Vergara, Jigger Sementilla, Gena Suelto, Ethan King

• Synopsis: A young lady finds herself pursued by a shadowy, long-haired enigma that forces her to confront her darkest instincts.

Along with the four sets of new plays, Virgin Labfest XXI: Hubo't Hubad will also revisit three tales from last year’s festival.

1. Polar Coordinates by Ade Valenzona

• Directed by Paolo O’Hara

• Cast: Jack Denzel, Michael Hilao, Chloe Dominique, Randy Villarama, Martha Comia

• Synopsis: After failing a high-stakes Math exam, a confused student finds himself spiraling. Between the mounting pressure of a fragile family dynamic and “strange” feelings for his tutor, he must decide if he’s going to follow the formula or carve his own path.

2. The Late Mister Real by Rolin Cadallo Obina

• Directed by Maynard Manansala

• Cast: Bene Manaois, She Maala

• Synopsis: The play takes us back to the claustrophobic days of the pandemic isolation facility. Separated by a single wall, an estranged couple explores the clashing worldviews that led to their marriage’s failure.

3. Presidential Suite #2 by Siege Malvar

• Directed by Johnnie Moran

• Cast: Eric de la Cruz, Kiki Baento, Michelle Ngu-Nario, MC de la Cruz, Emilio Macabantad, Ariel Diccion, Charm Aranton, Clottie Gealogo-Lucero

• Synopsis: Inside the hospital room of a senator accused of massive money laundering, her children scramble to protect their reputations and their futures.

Virgin Labfest 2026 will run Wednesdays to Sundays, from June 3 to 28. Performances are scheduled at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., with various pocket activities in between.

Theater lovers can also look forward to staged readings of scripts selected from this year’s submissions. These will take place at the Bulwagang Roberto Chabet on June 12, 19, and 26. Featured scripts include:
