Parts of North EDSA Closed Until May for MRT-7 Construction

(SPOT.ph) Heads up, motorists: Starting this February, expect a new round of traffic adjustments along North EDSA, with lane closures in place until May for the MRT-7 construction.

According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the road closures are needed for the MRT-7 turnback girder launching activity, a stage of construction that requires heavy equipment to be installed above the roadway. The affected stretch covers North EDSA between TriNoma and the Unified Grand Central Station area, including sections near North Avenue and West Avenue.

For northbound lanes heading toward Balintawak, two lanes will be closed 24/7 from February 1 to May 8 due to tower support works. On select nights between February 11 and March 10, the entire northbound section will be closed from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

Southbound lanes toward Cubao will see a similar setup, with two lanes closed 24/7 from February 22 until May 18, as well as full overnight closures from March 11 to March 23 from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

During daytime hours, three lanes remain passable in affected sections, while the closed lanes are occupied by construction equipment.

Authorities say traffic flow has remained light to moderate during the initial closures, even on nights when North Avenue was fully shut down. Still, it's best to know the alternate routes just in case.

For those heading to Cubao from Balintawak, authorities recommend diverting early. One option is to take FPJ Avenue straight through Fisher Mall, continue along Quezon Avenue, use the U-turn slot, and then turn right to Timog Avenue toward Cubao. Another route passes through West Avenue, continuing straight to Timog Avenue.

Drivers can also use Examiner Street off West Avenue, turning left to Quezon Avenue before exiting back to EDSA. A longer alternative involves FPJ Avenue to Baler or Del Monte Avenue, reconnecting to West Avenue before proceeding to Timog and back to EDSA.

Motorists traveling to Balintawak from Cubao are likewise advised to avoid the North Avenue area during closure hours. Suggested routes include Quezon Avenue to Agham Road, then North Avenue to Mindanao Avenue before exiting to EDSA via Congressional Avenue.

Another option from Quezon Avenue passes through Elliptical Road, Visayas Avenue, and Congressional Avenue. Vehicles coming from Project 6 or Road 8 may exit via Corregidor Street. For light vehicles, routes through Landmark and Mindanao Avenue—with or without the North Avenue U-turn slot—are also open.

During periods of full closure, zipper lane schemes will be enforced to keep traffic flowing in the affected direction. The closures are expected to continue through mid- to late May, depending on the progress of the works.
