Heads Up, LGBTQIA+ Couples! Registration for QC's Right to Care Card Is Now Online

(SPOT.ph) Paperwork is rarely the most romantic part of a relationship, but this one can matter in the moments when couples need each other most. LGBTQIA+ couples in Quezon City can now register for a Right to Care Card online, making it easier to apply for a card that can help them make medical decisions for each other.

To register, you only need to log in to the QC e-Services portal, select the “QC Right to Care Card” icon, and click “Apply for Right to Care Card.” From there, you will be asked to enter their personal information and their queer partner’s details before clicking “Save Application.”

You can even track the status of your application through your dashboard.

After submitting the application, wait for a call from the Gender and Development Council Office, which will handle verification and updates on the status of your application.

The Right to Care Card was launched by the Quezon City Government on June 24, 2023, during Pride Month. It allows queer couples to make medical decisions for each other through a Special Power of Attorney (SPA).

This means a cardholder may agree to, refuse, or withdraw consent for medical care on behalf of their partner, including treatment, procedures, tests, and prescriptions. That’s important because in hospitals, medical decisions are often handled by legal spouses or next of kin. For LGBTQIA+ couples, that can become complicated, especially during emergencies.

The SPA linked to the card also covers other hospital-related matters. These include choosing a doctor or health care provider, handling hospital admission or discharge, receiving or processing medical information, signing documents and waivers, and taking other actions covered by the card.

The Right to Care Card is available to queer couples who are 18 years old and above, with at least one partner living in Quezon City.
