(SPOT.ph) It’s rock climbing, it’s wall climbing… no, it’s bouldering!

Although within the same climbing family, bouldering is its own sport. Quickly gaining popularity among fitness and leisure enthusiasts of all ages, it’s a more “minimalist” approach to rock climbing—minimalist in the sense that all you’ll need are rental climbing shoes to get started. You don't need to learn knot-tying or find a climbing partner—there are no ropes or harnesses, just short walls and large boulders at varying angles depending on the difficulty level. And instead of rappelling down the wall, climbers properly fall or crash onto the thick safety cushions below, which is an essential beginner’s lesson.

Aside from being an invigorating physical activity without too much cardio or intense strength training, many have been drawn to it due to the mental “fun” of it all. It’s like solving a puzzle on the way up, all while testing your strength, balance, stamina, and mobility, within a supportive, community-led environment.

For bouldering, the Tandang Sora branch is the one to know: It identifies itself as the Philippines’ oldest bouldering gym. It veers away from the sleek, commercial gym look. It is much closer to a traditional, community gym with a much more laid-back and casual vibe.

Power Up has been sharing their love for climbing indoors and rock climbing outdoors since 1994, but has since modernized its programs and facilities to cater to the growing younger crowd.

They are also actively developing the next generation of climbers on the wall through the Climbing Camp, which serves ages 6 to 18. Facilitators teach based on age groups and skill levels.

Hangar 8

Address: Robinsons Magnolia, Aurora Blvd., Quezon City

Rates: TBA

Operating hours: Coming soon. Check their official pages for launching schedules.

Embodying the philosophy “Climb, Recover, Commune,” Hangar 8 is being built inside Robinsons Magnolia as more than a single-room bouldering gym.

Its 600-square-meter climbing area is divided into six named zones: Runway, Tarmac, Skyline, The OverHangar, Highball, and Control Tower. This gives climbers clearly separated sections for different wall angles and climbing experiences, including overhang and highball problems.

The facility is designed as a bright corner space wrapped in floor-to-ceiling curved windows, intentionally chosen to flood the space with natural light, boost your mood, and improve your focus.

Operating on the belief that "every climber starts somewhere" and "you don't need to be good to start," their internal Hangar Grades run systematically from 0 to H (Hero) to help you easily find your footing and track your progress.

Grava Katip

Positioned near the dynamic campus hub of Katipunan, Grava is a highly anticipated neighborhood climbing gym for local students and nearby residents.

Moving away from standard industrial styles, it introduces a modern, stylish space highlighted by warm wooden elements, minimalist interiors, and a cozy coffee bar on the second level. Rather than competing through sheer wall size, Grava is designed to function like a local third place for the Katipunan crowd—a gym you can visit between classes, then stay in for coffee and conversation afterward.
