Marikina City Starts Development on a New Public Park and Green Open Space
The new park will feature a skate park, pet park, and exercise area.

(SPOT.ph) We've said it before, and we'll say it again: Metro Manila is in dire need of more green, open spaces. You know, places where everyone can gather, stay active, and relax without breaking the bank. We're happy to report the public clamor seems to be working.
Already known for its laid-back, suburban feel, Marikina City is taking a step toward adding more green spaces with the soon-to-rise Marikina Active Transport Park, which recently broke ground. Here's what you need to know about this new public space in the making.

The Marikina Active Transport Park is the city's response to requests for more improved open spaces for an active lifestyle, community building, and outdoor activities. Set to rise in Barangay Marikina Heights, the project recently broke ground this June and is a joint project between the city government, led by Marikina Mayor Maan Teodoro, and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
Among the facilities planned for the transport park are skate and BMX parks, a pet park, and an outdoor exercise area. Designed with the needs of active visitors and residents in mind, the planned end-of-trip facilities will also include a shower area—a big convenience for cyclists, runners, and commuters.
Much like Marikina's other public parks, such as the Riverbanks Center, the Marikina Active Transport Park will also have food stalls and open spaces for recreation and community activities.
Eagle-eyed Marikeños were quick to point out, however, that the planned development will occupy an existing open space near the Barangay Hall—one that’s already home to plenty of mature trees and a creek. Naturally, this raised a big question among longtime Marikina Heights residents: What will happen to the towering trees that have been part of the neighborhood landscape for years?
According to the Marikina Public Information Office, Mayor Teodoro’s strict order assures that no tree will be cut or uprooted to give way to the construction. In fact, the trees will be part of the park’s design. Fingers crossed all the plans go according to plan. For now, we wait excitedly to see this come to life.
