Heads Up: Universal Studios Japan Is Closing Its Sesame Street Themed Area

(SPOT.ph) Heading to Osaka's Universal Studios Japan anytime soon? Well, this might just be your last chance to catch one of the park's OG themed areas. Universal Studios Japan just announced that it will be closing down Sesame Street Fun World after 14 years. Here's what we know so far.

Starting May 10, Universal Studios Japan will be one themed land short as it permanently bids farewell to the child-friendly haven that is Sesame Street Fun World. This was confirmed after the theme park announced the news on its social media pages earlier in the week.

Though smaller than many of USJ’s newer zones, Sesame Street Fun World remains an oldie but goodie. Most of the attractions lean kid-friendly—think slides, ball pits, and colorful play areas—but it’s also the best spot to catch beloved characters like Elmo, Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Bert, and Ernie. More importantly (especially for Japanese park-goers), it's also home to the Japan-exclusive character, Moppy, who made its debut at USJ during the park’s 10th anniversary celebration.

As expected, the closure saddened many parkgoers. The park’s social media announcement drew a flood of mournful comments from followers asking the all-too-important question: Where will they get their Sesame Street fix now? Well, the answer is simple: still at USJ. The park clarified that although Sesame Street Fun World will be permanently closed, the characters can still be found around the park for photo opportunities and performing in park-wide parades.

The themed area isn't going away in a snap, either. Universal Studios Japan is easing the pain of saying goodbye by holding the Forever Friends event starting on March 20. This limited-time-only event is the park's way of saying thank you to fans of the Sesame Street zone. During this time, guests can take photos at specific Sesame Street-themed photo zones, and once they do, they'll receive special photocards featuring Elmo and the rest of the gang. There will also be special message boards in the park where people can write and share their favorite memories of Sesame Street Fun World.

Originally opened in 2012, Sesame Street Fun World is one of the few themed zones worldwide dedicated to the beloved Sesame Street universe. Although this closes the chapter of a Sesame Street-themed area in USJ, don't worry. If you're from Asia, you can still find Sesame Street characters, merch, and rides available prominently featured in Universal Studios Singapore.

The park has yet to reveal what will replace Sesame Street Fun World—but here’s hoping whatever comes next gives our inner children something new to smile about. Maybe a new Pokémon-themed park with rides? Fingers crossed.
