Here's Where and When You Should Go to Japan For Cherry Blossoms This 2026

(SPOT.ph) The Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) has released its latest forecast for the budding and blooming of sakura in 2026—and that's your cue to start plotting that spring trip to Japan. Prime cherry blossom viewing is expected to be sometime in late March to April this year, so if you're chasing that main character moment beneath a canopy of cherry blossoms, bookmark this post and start booking your trips to Japan ASAP.

Here's everything we know so far about Japan's most blush-toned season so that you can finally tick off the elusive hanami experience off your bucket list.

One thing to keep in mind about the cherry blossom season in Japan is that it doesn't happen all in one go. Generally, flowers tend to bloom earlier in areas farther south in Japan, as the sakura trees need warmer temperatures to flower. This means that if you plan to catch the first wave of hanami, your best bet is to visit areas like Fukuoka, Osaka, and the rest of the Kansai region earlier in the season, which is in mid-to-late March.

But if you miss the first bloom, you can rest easy and just head to the Northern parts of Japan—such as Hokkaido, Miyagi, and Aomori—in early-to-mid April. These areas tend to have their peak cherry blossom season later because of their generally cooler climate.

Japan, being Japan, its official meteorological bureau (think their version of PAGASA) doesn't leave anything to chance. As cherry blossom season is an integral part of Japanese culture, the agency has devised several ways to forecast when you can expect the cherry blossom trees to flower in several sakura-dense areas in the country.

The forecasts shown above indicate when flowering is expected to begin. This means that a visit around this period might yield a few flowers here and there, but for the full hanami and blooms we often see on television, this is when you should go:

• Tokyo: March 28

• Fukuoka: March 30

• Nagoya: March 30

• Hiroshima: March 31

• Osaka: April 1

• Kyoto: April 1

• Wakayama: April 3

• Aomori: April 22

• Sapporo: April 29

Although Japan has forecasting cherry blossom season down pat, there's still a lot of room for error. To compensate, they have an app called the Sakura Navi, which allows you to find out more information on the forecast of the flowering and full bloom dates of cherry blossoms all over Japan.

This application includes features such as proximity notifications that tell you when you are near a Cherry Blossom spot, as well as a Stamp Card that gamifies the hanami experience.
