LOOK: Manila Opens New Senior Citizen’s Park and Pet Park

(SPOT.ph) Our cities could use the respite of more open and green spaces, especially in the congested corners of Metro Manila. Here, third spaces are mostly mall grounds, cafes, and food halls. But all is not lost. The good news is that more and more of these public spaces are opening, bringing us closer to the dream of green, livable cities.
The latest of these is the City of Manila’s newly inaugurated Senior Citizen’s Park and Community Pet Park in Pandacan, Manila. Here’s what we know about it so far.

The Senior Citizen’s Park and Pet Park occupies a nearly one-hectare area at Plaza Azul in Pandacan, Manila—on what used to be barren, idle land that was reportedly often polluted and used as a makeshift parking space.
The new park is open 24 hours daily, with security personnel assigned round the clock to ensure the safety of visitors and users of its amenities.
Scenes captured during its inauguration on August 12 show spacious grounds where visitors and their pets can hang out, relax, and stay active. There’s a playground for kids, obstacles for pets and furparents to play on, and a sunken garden.
Meanwhile, the activity area and al fresco space also open up the park to various community activities and events.
The park is decorated with colorful murals and painted grounds, a refreshing sight against the area's concrete surroundings. There’s even a lawn area where visitors can play croquet!
While the park has a covered pavilion where senior citizens can relax, it’s also envisioned as a space for light exercise. However, some netizens have noted that the fitness area could use more exercise equipment, as is typically seen in community spaces like it. We do hope this is part of the future plans to enliven the space.
The Senior Citizen’s Park and Pet Park is part of the “Green Green Green” initiative, which aims to expand green, open spaces to improve the environmental conditions and quality of life across Metro Manila. If this is an undertaking that local governments are now taking seriously, we can gladly cheer them on.
